What's In Your Camera Bag? Featuring Photographer Shawn Brackbill

By Tim Toomey   |   August 04, 2014

What’s in your camera bag that’s specific to the type of work you shoot?

I only use fast prime lenses.  I've never really owned a zoom lens so I feel that my style has developed in a way that works best with fixed lenses.  I also like that they are fast, f1.4 for 2 of them, so they are essential with my natural light shooting

What’s the most unusual item in your camera bag?

It's not shown in the picture but for the last 10 years or so I've been carrying those filter sample books which I use occasionally in my portrait work.  Holding them in front of the lens to add color and texture.

What is your “workhorse” item? - What can’t you live without

Right now it's my Nikon D700 and the 50 1.4 and the 85 1.4.   I'm using this set up for pretty much every shoot that I do.  Nikon really killed it with the D700.  It has a very special image quality, even straight out of the camera that's special.  It's become part of my style as well.

Name the one thing you would advise a photographer to carry with them at all times?

A camera

Any tricks for packing light, space-saving techniques?

I usually bring a smaller bag that could hold the DSLR with the 50 on it or 2 lenses.   I use this bag to work out of and store the larger bag.
